Egbert and Caroline have a plot of around 1300 square metres for doing absolutely “nothing”. ‘The peace and quiet is wonderful.
We’d been thinking about it for a while: when I turn sixty, we’ll buy a second house. In Moraira, because my wife used to go there on holiday with her family and we also go there twice a year.
Until my accountant said: “Why not do it now?” Why not, actually?! And that’s how we’ve been able to enjoy it for twelve years longer. As have my parents. And our four children.
We bought a nice plot in Moraira. With a sea view, that was important to me. And within walking distance of the centre, the bars and restaurants and the beach, that was important to Caroline. We selected three contractors, just through Google. Two Spanish and one Dutch.
And you know where this is going – the last one was Andries. He took us to construction projects and clients’ houses. In addition to the fact that he’s just a likeable man, every construction site was tidy and efficiently organised. He has a close-knit team with foremen who also speak Dutch. The way of thinking and communicating is the same. That feels familiar. Because let’s face it, you see all those programmes on television, and you hear stories:
The swimming pool that gradually empties or pipes that turn out not to be connected. Would you like to see that type of stone in that colour? And off we went to one of Andries’ clients to see it in practice. He was welcomed everywhere with open arms. That’s also a good sign. Andries is with you every step of the way, makes suggestions and is clear about what is and isn’t possible.
We wanted to pave a part of the driveway. But Andries said to wait. The soil has to settle. It will subside. Start with gravel.’
I don’t really have one favorite place. We like every piece of the house. The living room with sea view. The glass front that slides open almost completely so that the living room continues into the covered terrace. The flagstones around the house, the outdoor kitchen, the Mediterranean garden and of course the swimming pool.
We have been there for twelve weeks last year. Every free day we are in Spain and in ten years we will live there. Perhaps with another base in the Netherlands. But when we land in Alicante and drive through the neighboring village of Teulada, see the sea, we say to each other: we are home again!”
