Seated at the long table under the Spanish sun, surrounded by almond and olive trees, with a view of the valley with orange trees and the mountains around it, Monique and John tell us about the realisation of their dream house.
“We actually wanted to go to Ibiza, to a finca in the campo surrounded by sheep. The relaxed Spanish lifestyle. Luckily, things went differently. At the Second Home Expo, we met an enthusiastic estate agent who had a nice bit of land near Dénia. And who had a good friend who builds houses. That was Andries” says Monique.
John: “Dénia was a real discovery for us. A fantastic climate with 300 days of sunshine and 23 degrees in January! Our house is just outside the village of Benidoleig and 25 minutes from Dénia, between the mountains and the sea. It has lots of privacy, tranquillity and a wonderful view. The air here is the cleanest in all of Europe. And I feel the difference, because since I’ve been living here I’ve had no more problems with allergies.”

John & Monique
“We knew exactly what the house should look like,’ Monique tells us. ‘A central part with our private quarters in one wing and in the other, a luxury private hotel for two, with a view of the swimming pool from the roof patio as you enjoy the setting sun. The house was down on paper in just a few days.”
“We had already sold our farm in the Netherlands before we rented a house near here,” John carries on. “We went to look at the construction every day. It was always enjoyable. There was a permanent team of three people who have worked for Andries for years, and Ramon as foreman. Always cheerful and helpful. The construction was really good fun. No stress, on time and on budget and a topping out celebration when the builders reached the highest point. We regularly went for a drink in the village or organised a barbecue. And we’re still in touch.”
